ABOUT US
Why are we growing these tiny plants?
Hi, I am Michael Morris. My wife Trisha Morris and I are your Bloomington and Normal Illinois premium Microgreen providers. Both of us were born and raised in central Florida where the trees stay green and the flowers are in bloom all year long.
The 2 of us didn't meet until our mid-20s, but quickly discovered that we both had an interest in gardening. Both of us attended an Agriculture class in high school and both of us had jobs in the industry before. Trisha worked in a horticulture nursery and I had done landscaping work.
At our first home together we had a few homemade wooden raised planters and turned some old tires into planters as well.
Plus, Trisha is a big fan of flowers and succulents so we always have Orchids, aloe, cacti, and other indoor plants around. Work transplanted us from central Florida to central Alabama in 2019. We didn't have much of a yard there so we had to be very strategic with our raised planters.
In addition to that I started looking into other farming practices to compensate for the small area we had to work with.
I came across a few different methods and products that intrigued me. First was mushroom cultivation. The health benefits are great and they grow quickly, however we didn't have the space or conditions to pursue that. Next we looked into vertical farming and hydroponic systems.
Again we didn't have adequate space or resources. finally we found microgreens! Super health benefits, quick grow and this time we had enough space and resources for it.
All you really need is a window seal with a good amount of sunlight. Or in our case a grow light hanging in a large box in a closet. In those days we would only grow 1 10x20 inch trey at a time and harvest it as needed for each meal we incorporated them into.
Well before too long work uprooted us again and brought us here to BloNo at the end of 2022. I took a several month break from growing microgreens while we were moving and settling in. After we were settled in I realized we have a lot more space than a box in a closet to grow microgreens in. I started experimenting with new varieties and bringing them for my lunches at work. Some of my coworkers started taking interest in my Microgreens so I started growing more for them and was inspired to start a business.
I love growing microgreens. Knowing that I am growing some of the healthiest food a person can consume and being able to grow enough of it to provide others with these powerful super foods brings Trisha and me a lot of Joy. We look forward to seeing you at the Downtown Bloomington Farmers market.
